The Greater Baton Rouge metro area, or "Capital Area", consistently ranks high as a Top 10 destination for young professionals and entrepreneurs, due to our strong economy. The backbone of this economic strength is Baton Rouge's status as a major player in many diverse fields: industry, petrochemicals, medicine, shipping and research are among the strongest in the American South, with the Port of Baton Rouge the furthest upstream location capable of receiving Panamax ships and among the top 10 largest ports of the United States.

Baton Rouge's southeast location on the Mississippi River, compounded with its strategic positioning on the first bluff upriver from the Mississippi River Delta, the Istrouma Bluff, is a key component to continued success as a city, both in the contemporary day and throughout our history. Our unique geography creates a natural barrier, protecting our residents from flooding, hurricanes, and other natural disasters. Additionally, Baton Rouge has built an extensive levee system into our infrastructure, providing additional security for our citizens.

Our name and our unique cultural history dates back to 1699, when the French explorer Sieur d'Iberville led exploration parties up the Mississippi River. The boundaries between the tribal hunting grounds of the indigenous Houma and Bayou Goula tribes were demarcated by reddish cypress poles, often spearing small animals from the hunt. These poles and their location were called le b??ton rouge, or ???the red stick???, by the explorers. Explore our history in the Neo-Gothic medieval castle of our Old Louisiana State Capitol or the art-deco New Louisiana State Capitol, the historic homes of our districts and ledgers, with everything from antebellum plantations and Italian Renaissance style to modern and contemporary buildings. The Louisiana State Museum, Odell S. Williams Now and Then African American Museum, Arsenal Museum, Bogan Fire Station, Old Louisiana State Capitol Museum, LSU Museum of Natural Science, Old Governor's Mansion and the USS Kidd are other historical destinations of interest.
